There is increasing interest in the formation of new molecular components built with a “bottoms-up” approach: small molecularly-precise parts coming together to become larger ordered complexes. Stanford researcher Ryan K. Louie has developed a patented method of casting metallic nanowires from hollow microtubule lumens. Kinetics studies have shown the ability for taxol and other molecules to diffuse inside microtubules. Louie’s strategy involves polymerizing tubulin protein into microtubules using taxol, followed by diffusion of silver ions into the lumen, with a subsequent reduction of the silver ions into silver solid using citric acid; the microtubule protein templates are then destroyed, leaving behind a nanowire that has been molded to the dimensions of the template.
This technology addresses a number of the challenges currently facing nanoscale component production, including control of nanowire dimensions, placement and arrangement of nanowires, and the need for more environmentally friendly “green chemistry” (the method is carried out under mild conditions using starting materials that are widely available and relatively safe to handle).
The US patent for this technology issued on November 6, 2012.
