Stanford University and IBM researchers have developed a method for producing electroactive copolymers that have two different segments – a light emitting segment and a charge-transporting segment. This means both of these abilities can be incorporated into a single polymer layer, making optoelectronic devices such as LEDs simpler and more versatile. Additionally it makes it possible to make simple, and even flexible, light emitting surfaces. Furthermore it provides faster, easier, and cheaper fabrication of optoelectonic devices and reduces the materials required in the fabrication process. This invention can be used for many devices, including LEDs, photovoltaic cells, photodetectors, chemical sensors and biosensors.
